Constructed between 1880 and 1905, the East Branch Big Creek Dam is a historical pile dam in the East Branch of Big Creek, registered as a State of Michigan archeological site. The site was dewatered in the 1990s, leading to accelerated decomposition of the remaining wooden structures. Although the dam does not cause thermal pollution, its removal is expected to increase groundwater inputs and cooling of the river. Given the proximity to Red Oak Road’s culvert, planning will include measures to prevent potential undermining or perching of the culvert. The surrounding alder wetland and beaver activity will also be considered in the restoration design.
