The Almena Dam, an old masonry structure on DNR property previously used as a hatchery facility, is constructed of stone and mortar and was rehabilitated in 2001. Currently in poor condition with a low hazard rating, the dam does not create a significant pool upstream. The deconstruction project will focus on removing the associated hatchery structures, allowing Hayden Creek to reconnect with its floodplain. This will improve the ecological function of the creek, transforming it from a glorified ditch to a more natural stream environment, and enhancing habitat for local wildlife.
