Active Projects

Michigan TU has been subcontracted through Michigan DNR’s America the Beautiful Challenger Grant for four dam removal projects aimed at improving river ecosystems and enhancing fisheries across Michigan. The Spring Creek Trout Pond Dam in Luce County, deemed irreparable and located in a state-designated Natural River watershed, is set for removal to restore natural flow and habitat. Similarly, the Hulbert Rd Dam on the Au Sable River, with strong support from the landowners, is prioritized for removal to improve and reconnect the north branch of the Au Sable. The East Branch Big Creek Dam, a historical site, is also slated for removal to restore hydrology and remove a  safety hazard. Lastly, the Almena Dams, including a deteriorating masonry structure and five earthen dams on DNR property, will be deconstructed, allowing Hayden Creek to reconnect with its floodplain and improve overall watershed function. These projects collectively aim to enhance ecological resilience, restore natural hydrology and river function, and support native fish populations.

Contractors: More information about bids for these projects will be posted on each project page. Direct questions about these projects to Jordyn (jordyn.stoll@michigantu.org) or Kristin (kthomas@michigantu.org).
